AA-filter-free 24-megapixel CMOS image sensorto deliver astonishingly-high-resolution images

The K-3 comes equipped with a CMOS image sensor with approximately 24 effective megapixels. Based on the design scheme that puts priority on image resolution, it is designed without an optical AA (anti-aliasing) filter. The result is that the K-3 makes the best use of the total resolving power of the 24-megapixel CMOS sensor to produce sharp, fine-detailed images rich in gradation, while faithfully recreating the sense of depth, ambience and texture in captured images.

AA filters are designed to reduce false color and moiré by separating light by frequencies and obscuring outlines. Although the K-3 has no AA filter, it generates very little false color thanks to the large number of pixels present. Even when false color is generated, it is kept to an undetectable level.

By applying microscopic vibrat ions to the CMOS sensor during exposure, the K-3 minimizes false color and moiré. You have a choice of three settings to obtain the desired effect: “TYPE 1” to attain the optimum balance between image resolution and moiré; “TYPE 2” to prioritize moiré compensation; and “OFF” to prioritize image resolution. Thanks to this innovative feature, the K-3 offers the benefits of two completely different cameras — the high-resolution images assured by an AA-filter-free model, and minimized false color and moiré assured by an AA-filter-equipped one. You can switch the AA filter effect** on and off as you wish.

State-of-the-art SAFOX 11to assure high-speed, high-precision autofocusing

The K-3 features the latest SAFOX 11 AF module equipped with a highly responsive, sensit ive AF sensor. 
It also incorporates a diffractive lens in its optics to greatly improve focusing accuracy while effectively minimizing any chromatic aberration generated within the module. Since the entire module is encased in an airtight, shock-resistant housing, demanding outdoor shooting has very little effect on the K-3’s autofocusing accuracy. In addition, this module features a light-source sensor to eliminate minute focusing errors caused by certain artificial light sources.

An image captured by the K-3’s RGB light-metering sensor with approximately 86,000 pixels resembles a Live View image. Unlike conventional metering sensors which measure the subject’s light level only, it even measures the subject’s primary color and its motion with great precision, then feeds the obtained data instantly to the PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System.

The K-3 features a 27-point AF system, with 25 cross-shaped sensors positioned in the middle, to assure accurate focus on the subject, and also to allow more flexibility in image composition. This system not only assures extra-accurate autofocusing when using a very fast lens with a large maximum aperture, but also very accurately detects hard-to-focus subjects in low-light situations.

High-precision AF with F2.8 luminance flux linear sensors

The center sensor and two sensors just above and below it are designed to detect the luminance flux of an F2.8 lens for high-precision autofocusing. When using a very fast lens with a shallow depth of field, these sensors greatly improve the focusing accuracy.

 

Dependable AF at super-low minimum luminance of –3 EV

The K-3’s high-sensitivity AF sensor assures dependable autofocus operation down to a minimum luminance of –3 EV (when using 25 middle sensors), preventing the AF mechanism from slowing down or being confused by high-contrast areas in back-lit situations. It also captures low-contrast subjects with great accuracy.

to choose the best AF pattern for a subject or composition

The K-3 not only allows you to select the number of AF points for a given image composition, but also lets you shift their position in the image field. In addition to three basic modes (27-Point Auto” to use all AF points; “Select” to choose just one specific point; and “Spot” to narrow down the select area), you can choose more flexible zone select and select-area expansion modes to accommodate specialized applications.

You can choose a set of nine points forming a square, which can be shifted as desired. The PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System detects a subject placed within this square, optimizes the focus, and tracks its movement — all automatically.

Choose one of 27 AF points to focus on the subject, and the K-3 automatically tracks the subject and refocuses on it with the help of the neighboring points, even when it moves away from the initial point. You can select the desired expansion area from S (eight points), M (24 points) and L (26 points).

The PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System accurately detects the color, shape and movement of a subject, and keeps monitoring it throughout the imaging process. With the help of this innovative system, the K-3 automatically shifts the AF point to trace the subject’s movement with great speed and precision. Thanks to a wide AF area covered by 27 AF points, it maintains the sharp focus on the subject, even when it’s moving at high speed or when you are using the high-speed continuous shooting mode.

** This function is available when the camera’s AF mode is set to AF.C (continuous) or AF.A (auto).

AF customization

to fine-tune AF operation to individual preferences

Every photographer has his or her own preferred AF settings for specific subjects, photographic conditions and subject-tracking maneuvers. The K-3 accommodates these preferences with its extensive list of AF customization menus.

You can assign the desired AF functions to the selected AF (AF.S or AF.C) and drive modes. In addition to the focus-priority and release-priority modes, you can also choose the FPS-priority mode during continuous shooting.

AF hold setting

Even when the subject moves away from the in-focus point or the K-3 loses the sight of the subject because of some obstacle, the K-3 retains the in-focus status. Depending on the photographic conditions or your preference, you can choose one of three holding durations.

AF hold off

This default setting enables the K-3 to respond more swiftly to a fast-moving subject since the AF system stays more sensitive to the subject’s movement. It also allows a speedier shift of the AF point when the subject moves away from the in-focus point or reappears from behind an obstacle.

AF hold high

Since the K-3 retains the in-focus status for a long duration, a fast-moving subject can be captured in sharp focus even when it moves behind some obstacles. This prevents the K-3 from shifting the AF point prematurely to an unintended point.

High-speed continuous shooting at 8.3 images per second

to preserve the action in a sequence of images

Thanks to the PENTAX-exclusive three-motor and mirror-bounce damper mechanisms and the high-performance imaging engine, the K-3 provides high-speed continuous shooting at a maximum speed of approximately 8.3 images per second. With the K-3, you a much better chance of capturing “a once-in-a-lifetime image,” because you may find a better-composed or better-focused image which you might have otherwise missed with a slower drive speed.

The innovative three-motor mechanism, in which each motor optimizes the action of the shutter, mirror and diaphragm independently, is the key to the K-3’s high-speed continuous shooting. You can adjust the drive speed in three steps to match the speed of the subject’s movement.

The newly designed damper mechanism minimizes the shock caused by the swing action of the mirror, at both the mirror-up and mirror-down positions. At either position, this mechanism instantly stabilizes the mirror to improve the precision and stability of the AE and AF systems.

The arm of Damper A catches the mirror (1), then absorbs the shock by spring action (2). At the same time, Damper B rotates to regulate the action of Damper A and prevent swing-back action of the mirror (3).

At mirror-down position

The arm of Damper B catches the mirror (1), then absorbs the shock by spring action (2). At the same time, Damper A shifts downwards to regulate the action of Damper B and prevent swing-back action of the mirror (3).

Although the CMOS image sensor with 24 effective megapixels outputs large-volume data, the K-3 assures high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 8.3 images per second, and up to 60 images in JPEG format* (or 23 in RAW format) in a single sequence. You can keep releasing the shutter until you’ve achieved your photo goal.

The K-3 features a nine-mode exposure system featuring Green, Program (P), Sensitivity-Priority (Sv), Shutter-speed/Aperture-Priority (TAv), Aperture-Priority (A), Shutter-Priority (Tv), Metered Manual (M), Bulb (B) and Flash Sync (X) modes. It also provides a wide exposure compensation range of ±5EV to create dramatic high-key and low-key images.

1/8000-second high-speed shutter
to freeze the decisive moment of high-speed action

The K-3 incorporates a high-speed, high-precision shutter unit with a top speed of 1/8000 second, which allows you to freeze the split-second action of a fast-moving subject. When coupled with large-aperture lenses, this high-speed shutter allows you to open up the aperture to throw the background out of focus, even in bright locations.

Multi-mode light-metering for flexible response to all types of subjects and shooting styles

The K-3 provides a choice of three distinctive light-metering modes (multi-pattern, center-weighted and spot), which can be quickly switched by turning the rear e-dial while pressing the metering mode button. The multi-pattern mode assures high-precision light metering, thanks to the outstanding resolving power of the newly designed 86,000-pixel RGB metering sensor. In the multi-pattern and spot modes, you can even set the correlation between the metering area and the AF point.

Hyper Control system for flexible control of the depth of field and the subject’s motion

For automatic exposure control, the K-3 features the PENTAX-developed Hyper Program mode, which allows you to choose the desired aperture or shutter speed without taking your eye off the viewfinder. For manual exposure control, it provides the Hyper Manual mode, which instantly sets a normal exposure level based on the program line.

Live View shooting 
for constant image display, even during high-speed continuous shooting

With a single push of the Live View button on the back panel, you can instantly switch from viewfinder shooting to Live View shooting. You can even take advantage of such useful features as high-speed contrast-detection AF, focus assist and 10-times zoom display to facilitate your shooting. The K-3 also gives you a choice of three grid display patterns: Golden Section, 16 Segment and Scale.

The K-3 provides high-speed continuous shooting at a top speed of approximately 8.3 images per second, even during Live View shooting. Thanks to the high-speed image data processing capability of the PRIME III imaging engine, the Live View image is constantly on display, with minimal blackouts. This means that you never lose the sight of the subject during shooting.

Digital level for accurate detection of horizontal and vertical tilt

Since the built-in digital level detects the horizontal and vertical tilt of the camera with great accuracy, it comes in handy with such subjects as landscapes and nightscapes. You can even check the horizontal tilt on an exposure bar scale on the LCD monitor.* During viewfinder shooting, you can also check it in the viewfinder.*

Auto level compensation for hands-off adjustment of horizontal inclination

The K-3 automatically compensates for horizontal inclination of the image, bringing it to a level position by rotating the image sensor by as much as ±2 degrees (or ±1 degree when the SR mechanism is in operation). This convenient function comes in handy not only during handheld shooting, but also during tripod shooting.

 

Without auto level compensation for extra-fine adjustment during Live View shooting

When the K-3 is mounted on a tripod during Live View shooting, this function allows you to make minute adjustment to image composition and compensate for the camera’s tilt, by shifting the CMOS image sensor horizontally and vertically (±1.5mm max. in 24 steps; ±1mm when the sensor is rotated) and/or by rotating it (±1 degree max. in 8 steps).

Compatibility with GPS unit to simplify astronomical photography and position data recording

By mounting the optional O-GPS1 GPS Unit onto the K-3’s hotshoe, you can record the latitude, longitude and altitude of a shooting location and the camera’s precise direction on a captured image. The K-3’s CMOS image sensor also allows you to automatically trace the movement of celestial bodies, without the need of an equatorial telescope. The K-3 even adjusts its clock to local time based on the GPS data.

Interval shooting to record the transition of a constantly changing subject

Since the K-3 automatically captures a series of images at a fixed interval, you can record the transition of an ever-moving subject or gradually changing event over an extended period of time. You can preprogram the interval (two seconds to 24 hours), a number of images to be captured (two to 2,000) and the starting time.

Interval Composite

This function synthesizes a single composite image from all images captured during interval shooting. Like multi-exposure shooting, you have a choice of Average, Accumulation and Comparative Brightness modes to obtain the desired result. You can even save halfway images.

HDR shooting
to assure worry-free handheld shooting

The K-3’s HDR (High Dynamic Range) function takes a set of three images at three different exposure levels, then picks properly exposed areas from the original set to synthesize a single, wide-gradation image. Since the K-3 automatically compensates for slight misalignment of the composition among the original images,** you can take advantage of this convenient function even during handheld shooting. You can also save the original images in the RAW format,. Since you can store them as a single RAW-format file, you can easily locate them for subsequent data redevelopments.

** The automatic position adjustment function may not yield the desired effect under certain conditions, including excessive misalignment of the three images, certain lens focal lengths and particular subject patterns.

 

Multiple exposure
to synthesize highly creative images

The K-3 allows you to capture the desired number of images (two to 2,000) and synthesize them into a single, eye-catching composite image with great ease. You have a choice of three synthesis modes to obtain the desired visual effect.

 

Average

Since the K-3 calculates the average exposure level of captured images, you can create a normal-exposure composite image without resetting the exposure for each image. This is the simplest mode for enjoying the complicated multi-exposure technique.

 

Accumulation

The exposure level of all captured images is totaled to synthesize a composite image. When you under- or overexpose certain images, the brightness difference in these images is reflected in the resulting image.

 

Comparative Brightness

The brighter areas of captured images are averaged in a composite image, while the darker areas are expressed as they are. This mode comes in handy when synthesizing subjects such as the moon, fireworks and illuminated buildings into a single image.

4K-compatible interval movie shooting
to record a constantly-changing subject in a high-resolution movie clip

You can save a series of images taken by interval shooting in a single movie file, as if captured by time-compressed, super-slow photography.*** The K-3 provides a choice of recorded pixels from Full HD, HD and 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels), in the Motion JPEG file format and the AVI container format. The resulting movie clips are supported by many applications, and can be played back on a personal computer.

*** The interval can be selected from two, five, 10, 20 and 30 seconds, or one, five, 10, 30 and 60 minutes. The total recording time can be set between 14 seconds and 99 hours, even though it may fluctuate based on the selected interval.

The K-3’s Full HD movie recording function* offers many of the benefits of SLR photography, including high-sensitivity shooting, interchangeable lenses with distinctive perspective and rendition, and a beautiful bokeh effect. It even offers a choice of 60i frame rate to capture and play back fast-moving subjects beautifully and flawlessly. A variety of creative tools, such as custom images, are also available for movie recording.

Audio recording

The K-3’s built-in microphone provides monaural sound for your movies, but you may add an external microphone for stereo recordings. You can also monitor the sound using a headset. For audio level adjustment, the audio recording level is displayed in a bar graph on the K-3’s LCD monitor.

to apply the desired finishing touch without a PC

The K-3 provides in-body development of RAW-format files, with the developed files saved as separate TIFF or JPEG files. You can even adjust white-balance and custom-image parameters during RAW data development. Since this feature provides a PC-free environment, you can work on your RAW files anywhere and anytime.

This software develops RAW-format data and saves as JPEG- or TIFF-format files. Supported by the acclaimed SILKYPIX® image development engine, it not only assures high-speed RAW data development, but also allows exposure/white-balance adjustments and advanced color conversions during development. User-friendly operation and durable body for challenging shooting locations

Optical finder with a 100% field of view
to deliver a sharp, clear viewfinder image at 0.95X magnification

The K-3 features an optical finder with a nearly 100-percent field of view to provide a clear view of the image field, even at the edges. Thanks to the application of a new coating to the reflective surfaces, its light transmittance is almost 15 percent higher than that of the K-5II’s. In addition, the eyepiece optics have been completely redesigned to deliver a large, crisp image at 0.95-times magnification (with a 50mm lens at infinity).*

Wireless LAN remote control operation

The K-3 accepts the optional O-FC1 FLUCARD FOR PENTAX 16GB to provide wireless LAN functions** using a smartphone or tablet computer. You can release the K-3’s shutter and change exposure settings from a distance while checking the Live View image, and download and browse captured images on your smartphone/tablet monitor.

3.2-inch Air Gapless LCD monitor 
for outstanding visibility in the field and superior scratch resistance

The K-3’s Air Gapless LCD monitor has a special resin layer applied between the protective panel and the LCD screen to effectively cut down the reflection and dispersion of light and assure excellent visibility even under bright sunshine. Its 3.2-inch screen displays a large subject image at 3:2 aspect ratio, while the protective panel is made of tempered glass to keep it free of scratches and abrasions.

Dual SD card slot
for efficient image data filing on two memory cards

The K-3’s card slot accepts two SD memory cards, with a choice of three data storage modes: “Serial” to store a large volume of data, “Duplicate” for simplified data backup, and “RAW/JPEG Division” to separate data files based on the recording format.
Note: The second receptacle of the SD card slot accepts an Eye-Fi card or FLUCARD to enable wireless LAN functions.

In order to provide swift, intuitive control of advanced functions and user-friendly features, the K-3 features more direct-access control buttons and levers than ever before. You can even operate them without removing the eye from the viewfinder.

  • AF mode button

    Positioned on the front panel, this button provides two AF-related functions. While pressing this button, you can turn the front e-dial to shift the AF mode, or use the rear e-dial to switch the AF select area.

  • Mode dial unlock lever

    This lever has two positions to prevent accidental operational errors: one position allows you to turn the mode dial only when the lock button is pressed; the other position frees the mode dial lock for speedier operation.

The K-3’s top, bottom and side panels are made of highly rigid, lightweight and shock-resistant magnesium alloy. Its chassis, which houses the core components, is made of high-rigidity, corrosion-resistant stainless steel.

Cold resistance down to -10°C
for solid, dependable performance at freezing temperatures

The K-3 has been subjected to a series of cold-resistance tests at freezing temperatures down to -10°C. Every single operation was closely examined during these tests, including the operational stability of electronic circuits, the operating precision of mechanical parts, the strength and response of optical components, and the fluctuation of battery voltage. That’s why you can always depend on the K-3, even in cold environments.

Dustproof, weather-resistant construction
to assure solid performance under demanding outdoor conditions

The K-3 features a dependable dustproof, weather-resistant construction to prevent the intrusion of water, moisture and dust into its interior. A total of 92 special seals are applied to the crucial areas of the K-3 body, including control parts, panel joints and cover hinges, to assure an airtight body. The optional D-BG5 Battery Grip also features the same weather-resistant, dustproof construction.

DR II (Dust Removal II) mechanism

This innovative mechanism effectively removes all dust particles clinging to the surface of the CMOS image sensor unit by vibrating the optical glass panel at supersonic speed.

Dust alert system
for early detection and efficient removal of dust particles

This system detects dust particles clinging to the CMOS image sensor, and indicates their position on the LCD monitor. Once the dust particles have been identified, they can be easily removed on the spot — either by activating the DR II mechanism, or by using the optional O-ICK1 Image-Sensor Cleaning Kit or a dust blower.
